Get #LitterLiterate
Get #LitterLiterate is a Zero Waste Scotland behaviour-change initiative. We want to empower S1 and S2 students to change the culture of littering in Scotland by becoming social influencers within their local and online communities.
The programme aims to teach students about the harmful effects of littering and mobilise them to create their own shareable YouTube videos that encourage their friends, families and wider communities to Get #LitterLiterate and do the right thing with their waste.
The programme is very flexible, so can be delivered over a selection of lessons in the classroom, or over a longer time-frame incorporating outdoor learning and an in-school YouTube competition. There is also a further option to run a peer education programme in a local primary school.
Resources
We’ve created a handy set of resources to give you ideas and suggestions on how to run the programme with S1 and S2 students.
The resources include:
- Teacher notes
- Carousel ideas
- Social media workshop guide
- Student guide
- Peer education programme guide
- PowerPoint presentation
Spread the word
Once you and your students have taken part in Get #LitterLiterate, we’d love for you to continue the conversation on social media and show us what you have been up to, using #LitterLiterate.
About Zero Waste Scotland
Zero Waste Scotland exists to create a society where resources are valued and nothing is wasted. Our goal is to help Scotland realise the economic, environmental and social benefits of making best use of the world’s limited natural resources.
This project is being led by ZWS’s Litter & Flytipping Prevention team. A steering group comprising Zero Waste Scotland, Keep Scotland Beautiful, Marine Conservation Society, Marine Scotland and two teachers (one primary and one secondary) was convened to guide delivery of this project. These resources have been developed in consultation with them.
